Malachi 1:1-5
Nicknames can have greater power than our given name because they can better reflect /represent who we are, especially when God gives us the name (Revelation 2:17)
Certain names for God used in certain places. God revealing Himself through names.
God’s names carry content and carries power.
Yahweh used 6800 times in Old Testament.
Exodus 3:13-14 – I AM WHO I AM
In Malachi God says to His people – I love you. His name for us also carries conviction because His people have not lived up to their covenant with God.
Yahweh Sabaoth – to wage war
Lord Almighty – post exilic personal
I Samuel 17:45 – David vs. Goliath – reminding His people that He is their power – a covenant maker and keeper
What does it mean for me?
Knowing the name helps you understand the message conveyed (tone and content)
Knowing the name is our salvation (experiential knowledge) – John 17: 3, 6, 26
Jesus reveals the essence of the Father
Knowing the name helps us glorify Him
